Writing Your About Me

I feel like it goes without saying that having an “about me” on your website is incredibly important. However, oftentimes it’s overlooked. The following six steps will walk you through how to write an “about me” which will let your readers learn more about you, your Local’s Guide, and establish your credibility.

Introduce Yourself

Start your about me off by introducing yourself and where you are from. In this section, you can also explain what brought you to your community. Is it where you grew up, did you move there for college, was it for a job? Let them know why you are there.

Your Why

In this next section, you will want to discuss what you love about your community. Why is it special to you? What are your favorite things about your community?

The Missing Thing

Now that you have established your love and passion for your community, begin explaining what you noticed was missing. What pitfalls could you see and what would remedy them? For my mom and Lake Oconee Life she “started recognizing the need for a community hub to keep locals up to date with all the events, activities, dining, and shopping that make our community special.”

The Local’s Guide

In this section share why you decided to start your Local’s Guide and what you plan to achieve by doing so. What would you like the community to gain from your Guide? As time goes on, go back to this section to share successes you’ve had with your Local’s Guide.

In this section, you can also share your mission. For Lake Oconee Life ours is, “to bridge the gap between our three communities here at Lake Oconee, creating a central hub of community information to make sure that you never miss out on the fun!” Further, clarify your mission statement to the reader by explaining how you achieve it specifically- explain your system.

Let Them Know More

Now let the reader get to know you a little better. Here you can share information about your family, pets, favorite sports team, or hobbies. For us, Lake Oconee Life is a family affair, and my mom shares what each of our titles is. She also writes about each one of her daughters, myself, and my sisters Tory and Evan. She gives a brief description of each of us. This part does need to be updated from time to time but I like it personally as it makes you feel you know my mom on a personal level and maybe feels more comfortable taking her recommendations. She also includes a photo of all of us from my wedding.

Wrap It Up

You are almost done! End your about with how your Local’s Guide is here to serve them. This is also a great place to link to your calendar or the top three blog posts, Week at a Glance, Weekend Events, and What’s Happening This Month. You can also invite the reader to subscribe to your newsletter to stay up to date on everything happening in your community.

You’re done! You’ve now told your readers what brought you to your community, why you love it so much, but that there was something missing and you set out to fix it. Now that you have told them what your Local’s Guide is all about and what they can expect from you. You’ve given them a great personal introduction to you, so now you feel like a true neighbor they can trust and count on. You’ve ended it with the next steps and invited them to subscribe.

Remember to update your about me every six months so it doesn’t become stale and to ensure current information.

Until Next Time,

Madi
